Geography Trainee 2018-19

"Although there is a lot to take in at first, you learn as you go and my confidence in teaching has gone from strength to strength each week. i2i ensure that you gradually build up your teaching over time.....this gradual transition has been brilliant for integrating us into the classroom and for building relationships with the students."

When I graduated from Royal Holloway University of London in July 2017 after studying Geography for three years I did think about going into teaching, however, I could not face the prospect of starting another course after just finishing my degree. I then started applying for graduate jobs and worked as a transport planner for 10 months . Although I was enjoying my graduate job, I still could not shift the idea of teaching out of my mind and decided to call the ‘Get into Teaching’ team one evening after work in January 2018. This is where my journey to becoming a Geography teacher began.

After contacting the ‘Get into Teaching’ team, I started the application process quite rapidly. I had booked two school experience days, started my application and was researching the skills tests required to achieve a teaching place. The i2i partnership instantly stood out to me as the training provider that I wanted to pursue my training with as it was local and provided excellent training within an outstanding school. I was offered to interview and delivered a 20 minute lesson to three year 8 students, completed a short exam paper and had a formal interview. I was overjoyed when I was offered a place on the course after the interview and proceeded to accept the offer that day.

My main placement school has been Ash Manor in Ash, Surrey. Since starting in September, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time teaching here. Although there is a lot to take in at first, you learn as you go and personally my confidence in teaching has gone from strength to strength each week. i2i ensure that you gradually build up your teaching over time, from delivering starters in September to gradually taking whole lessons and classes by Christmas. This gradual transition has been brilliant for integrating us into the classroom and for building relationships with the students over time before taking on a class full time. I have been very fortunate to have been offered a job at Ash Manor when I complete my training year amd I am delighted!
